De la Rosa set for final Pirelli run
Pedro de la Rosa has been allowed by McLaren to take part in Pirelli's key private test in Turkey that is scheduled to take place next weekend, AUTOSPORT has learned. Formula 1's new tyre supplier wants to ensure that its products are well-suited to the intense demands of the Istanbul track - as it eyes evaluation of a new hard compound for this year's race plus further developments for 2012. And although de la Rosa has recently signed a reserve driver deal with McLaren, Pirelli has made no secret of the fact that it wanted the Spaniard to run one last time at a private test because he has the most knowledge of its preparations

Christensen leads GP3 test
Mucke driver Michael Christensen was quickest on the final day of this week's three-day GP3 test at Silverstone today. The Dane hit the front during the windy afternoon session with a 1m51.799s lap, beating Status' Alexander Sims by just under a tenth of a second. Nico Muller (Jenzer), Mitch Evans (MW Arden) and Rio Haryanto (Manor) completed the top five.

Trans Tasman’s Madison Down was back for Race Two of Monday’s online racing event in the iRacing.com V8 Supercar Series amid the dunes of Zandvoort, bringing a collective (good-natured) groan from the rest of the field. Down snared pole position from Dylan Sharman in the VRS Falcon, while Wayne Harris and Darrin Vouch put on their best qualifying performances to date to grab third and fourth respectively. Pirelli considers tweaking markings
Pirelli is considering a tweak to its tyre marking system after difficulties distinguishing the colours over the Australian Grand Prix weekend. Ahead of the race, Pirelli announced that its tyres would have different coloured lettering this year to distinguish their compound - with the soft (yellow) and hard (silver) being used in Melbourne. But with teams finding it difficult at times to work out which colour tyres were in use when the cars were in action, Pirelli has promised to re-examine its plan.
Sauber targets Spain for new diffuser
Sauber expects to have its 2011-style exhaust blown diffuser system ready in time for the Spanish Grand Prix, as it looks to build on the promising pace of its new C30. Although the team came away from Australia with no points after a technical infringement led to both cars being disqualified, the outfit is encouraged by the handling characteristics of the car.

You can't make an omelet, or so the saying goes, without breaking some eggs. So while it's unfortunate that the restructuring at Bertone means the dissolution of its museum collection, it also means that its contents are going up for auction. And they'll be crossing the block at no less fitting a location than Villa d'Este.
Those in the know will recognize Villa d'Este for the Concorso d'Eleganza held there every year, where the most gorgeous and rare of classic cars mingle with the finest concept cars unveiled throughout the year. This year's concours will mark the first time that RM Auctions will be holding an event at the open-air show on picturesque Lake Como, and in addition to the myriad unspeakably beautiful classics on the docket, RM has just announced the consignment of six concept cars from the Bertone Museum, each one-of-a-kind in its own right and available to collectors for the first time.
The consignment includes the 1967 Lamborghini Marzal, 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero, 1963 Chevrolet Testudo, 1974 Lamborghini Bravo, 1980 Lamborghini Athon and 1978 Lancia Sibilo. Each was a seminal design for Bertone, and each is expected to fetch well into the six and even seven figures. The Marzal, particularly, which was driven by Prince Ranier and Princess Grace at the start of 1967 Monaco Grand Prix, and the Stratos, the first prototype for the iconic supercar rally machine of the same name, are expected to sell for between €1,000,000 and €1,800,000... that's as much as $2.5 million apiece in equivalent American funds.

Onslow-Cole completes first Golf test
Tom Onslow-Cole had his first proper run in the AmD Milltek Volkswagen Golf that he will race in the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch on Tuesday. Overboost problems ruled the seven-time race winner out of the previous week's official BTCC test at Silverstone, meaning that the 100 laps completed at Brands Hatch were his first opportunity to assess the car. AmD team principal Shaun Hollamby said that the test had gone well and that hopes were high for this weekend's season-opener at the same circuit.
Horner surprised by Red Bull pace

McLaren: KERS issue made gap larger
McLaren's Martin Whitmarsh believes Sebastian Vettel's dominance of Australian Grand Prix qualifying was due in part to a KERS failure costing Lewis Hamilton time in Q3. Hamilton's McLaren was 0.8 seconds slower than Vettel's Red Bull, but Whitmarsh pointed out that as well as lacking boost, the KERS issue also upset the braking performance of the Briton's car
Rosberg: Mercedes closer than it looks
Mercedes is closer to the pace than its pace in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix suggests, according to Nico Rosberg. The German qualified seventh, 1.892s off Sebastian Vettel's pole time, but Rosberg has no doubts that a combination of car problems - including difficulties with the KERS system - driver error and the unusual Melbourne track configuration have stretched the deficit to Red Bull. "We are not as bad as we look today," said Rosberg when asked by AUTOSPORT whether the gap to the front is really almost two seconds, as the timesheets suggest
PSA: Pickup owners prone to pilfered tailgates

The Detroit News reports that tailgate thieves are overrunning southeast Michigan, costing truck owners and insurance companies between $1,200 and $3,600 per theft. The problem is so bad in part because stealing a tailgate only takes a few seconds when unlocked, and under a minute when they are locked. Thieves can reportedly remove a tailgate using only their fingers or with the aid of a regular old screwdriver - no specialized tools are needed.
To combat this problem, some auto dealers are displaying their trucks sans gate, or parking those trucks right up against a wall so thieves don't have room to operate. Not even a law making tailgate theft a felony worthy of up to five years in prison appears to be scaring off thieves. St. Clair Shores, MI police detective Dave Centala adds that the speed of the crime makes thieves difficult to catch, adding "they come at night, make no noise and we have never caught one in the act or recovered the part." Centala tells the DetNews that five were stolen in one night in St. Clair Shores, and in other cities the tailgates are being stolen in chunks.
Tailgate thefts are nothing new, and The Detroit News is only reporting on thefts in Michigan, but given the ease with which tailgates are being swiped, we're inclined to believe this continues to be a problem on the national level. Owners looking to protect their trucks can purchase an aftermarket lock, or they can park their vehicle in a garage or in a spot that gives thieves little room to remove the tailgate. Hopefully automakers will tune into this situation and make stealing tailgates far more difficult in the future.

Loeb slams Hirvonen over delay
Sebastien Loeb accused Mikko Hirvonen of deliberately delaying him when the Ford rejoined after changing a puncture on SS9 in Portugal. Hirvonen had to change the tyre on the Vascao stage, leaving him two minutes off his rally-leading team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala. The Ford rejoined as soon as the new tyre was fitted, and Hirvonen felt he was far enough ahead of Loeb not to hold the Citroen up - but the Frenchman vehemently disageed.
Perez didn?t plan to one-stop to seventh
Sauber rookie Sergio Perez says he did not plan to go through the Australian Grand Prix on just one tyre stop, after making an unfancied strategy pay off to score points in his maiden race. Perez said that having to preserve his front tyres through track position circumstances allowed him to finish the race on Pirelli's soft option rubber, securing himself a strong seventh place.
Rivals believe Red Bull still beatable
Red Bull Racing's rivals still believe they are in the hunt to topple Australian Grand Prix pole position man Sebastian Vettel in the first race of the season - despite admitting surprise at the speed the German showed as he grabbed pole position. Vettel has been in scintillating form throughout the Melbourne weekend, and edged the rest of the field by eight tenths of a second in qualifying - despite not using his KERS during the battle for grid positions. But even though that kind of advantage makes Vettel the clear favourite for victory, main opposition McLaren and Ferrari both think that the race itself may well prove to be a different story

Bourdais crashes heavily in warm-up
Sebastien Bourdais faces a race against time to make the start of his first race back in the IndyCar Series after crashing heavily in the morning warm-up in St Petersburg. Although the Frenchman was unhurt, his Dale Coyne Racing Dallara-Honda sustained heavy damage in the accident at the track's fast chicane, which ended with the car on fire. Penalty costs Lamborghini pole
The pole-winning All-Inkl Lamborghini has been awarded a five-place grid penalty for today's opening round of the FIA GT1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi. What We Like: The soundtrack, and the depiction of people using their Porsche sports cars for everyday driving and living is a nice change of pace for the brand and the ad work. We especially like the scene of the 911 trudging through snow, which it does with great aplomb thanks to a superior all-wheel-drive system. Porsches are seen as indulgences for men mostly that are often kept in garages under tarps when the snow falls. I'm not sure I would ever load mulch into a Cayman, but we do like the idea of the kids getting picked up from school. The yellow paint job for that 911 was a lovely touch by the ad creatives.
What We Don't Like: Not too much, though there is a bit of the strategy showing. The economy is still about as zippy as a Smart Fortwo and there's much talk about the lines and definition of luxury changing to more value and sensibility, all of which makes this campaign seem a little defensive to us.
Strategy: Porsches is not as impractical as you think. They can be great in the snow. You can get enough mulch in one to fill one of those upside-down tomato growers that hangs on your condo patio. A 911 can carry two small kids in the backseat, provided they are not part of the national obesity problem. We think Porsches, especially the 911, are fabulous sets of wheels that anyone would be proud to own for maximum driving excitement and brand appeal. But practical? Not on your Nellie.

Samuel Hubinette to field two-car Formula Drift team for 2011

Two-time Formula Drift champion Samuel Hubinette is fielding a two-car team for the 2011 season, calling on European Pro Drift champion Dean Kearney as his second driver. The two will compete in a Dodge Motorsports Challenger and a Dodge Viper SRT-10. Kearney will wheel the Viper, while Hubinette will pilot the Challenger.
The two will drive for Hubinette's own team, Samuel Hubinette Racing, and will get sponsorship from Dodge and V-LEDs Federal. Hubinette is sticking with longtime crew chief Brad Manka to lead both efforts.
Hubinette managed two Formula Drift championships in his first three seasons in the sport, and hopes to groom 22-year-old Kearney into the next Formula Drift champion. Kearney, a native of Ireland, won the 2009 European Pro Drift Championship. Watch for Hubinette and Kearney when the Formula Drift season kicks off April 8-9 in Long Beach, California.
