Loeb thinks lead will be sufficient
Sebastien Loeb says his 28-second advantage going into the final day of Rally d'Italia is big enough for him to win the Olbia-based event tomorrow afternoon. Loeb on brink of Sardinia win
Sebastien Loeb looks certain of victory in Sardinia with just one stage to go, but Mikko Hirvonen and Petter Solberg are only 1.3 seconds apart in the battle for second. Loeb's 28s overnight lead always looked adequate with today's itinerary consisting of just three stages on the morning loop and then the eight-kilometre power stage. Presiding over any large corporation has its demands, but also its share of perks. Especially when the company in question is an automaker like Aston Martin. The British carmaker's chief executive Dr. Ulrich Bez has his own Rapide to drive to and from work every day and also to represent the company at various events... but not for long.
As part of its upcoming auction - orchestrated at its historic facility in Newport Pagnell, England, by Bonhams - Bez has donated his own Rapide that will go to the highest bidder to raise funds for relief efforts in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that has ravaged the country.
The model in question, chassis number F00039, is a right-hand-drive model built in 2009. It's painted Concours Blue with Obsidian Black leather with Falcon Grey top-stitching and black carpets offset by walnut veneers. Bonhams will waive its commission for this particular lot that will be auction on Saturday, May 21. Follow the jump for the full press release.

We were there on a quest for a quest, anxious Lancelots after a late night run in a Series II E-Type over the A1A - yes, the Vanilla Ice road - had turned into a late, late evening with two Spaniards and three Ecuadorians discussing the merits of Top Gear and flying to Bogota to learn Spanish.
That's when Destiny called. Not fate itself, but a ferociously alluring lass with a voice of such fine tenor we had to fight the urge to put the phone down and bow to it whenever she spoke. She requested our presence in Tampa, 271 miles away, and we could only credit fortune for the delivery of a 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG for the purpose. It's the ultimate in modest-yet-graceful savagery (modest compared to the Bentley Continental GT), two tons of animatronic shark - a modern, mechanical Jaws - that would get us safely through the gators, hawks and sawgrass of the Everglades.

Auto sales were up sharply in April, but trucks continue to make up less of the overall pie. Ward's Automotive reports that light-duty pickups accounted for only 11.8 percent of overall vehicle deliveries; the lowest total since Ward's began collecting data back in 1980. Back in 2005, when the auto industry and the economy at large was far healthier, light trucks accounted for 22.9 percent of all vehicles sold.
There are a lot of reasons truck sales are flagging as of late, not the least of which is gasoline prices that are currently at about $4 per gallon nationwide. But truck sales are also being hurt by unemployment rates and continued weakness in the housing sector.
Trucks are no longer such a large portion of over all car sales, but the utilitarian vehicles are still selling far better than they were in 2010. Truck sales are up 17.9 percent year-over-year, but that number has been outpaced by overall growth of 19.4 percent.
While trucks aren't quite as popular as they were a few years ago, we suspect that this trend may lose steam as the economy improves. After all, light trucks continue to outsell cars even with high gas prices and a poor housing market, though the advantage is down to 5,000 units so far in 2011.

The Bugatti Veyron has sufficiently proven itself to be king of the road, but what happens when you run out of road? The earth's surface is, after all, covered in more water than it is land, let alone paved portions thereof. Ben Walsh's solution? This Bugatti-inspired speedboat design.
A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Walsh was largely responsible for the interior on the Cadillac Converj concept, and has since left GM's Advanced Design studio for an interior design position at PSA Peugeot Citroën. So he clearly has a passion for French cars, but for this project has set his sights on the exclusive Bugatti Veyron Sang Bleu edition.
Like other boat designs we've reported on, this example isn't likely to ever see production, but it's beautiful. It takes the Veyron's aluminum and carbon fiber construction and applies it to the form of a 30-foot speedboat that's vaguely reminiscent of the spaceships from Star Wars (Episode I) and Flight of the Navigator. The rear shot best illustrates the connection to the Veyron. The boat's single propeller indicates a single engine, but when you're packing a 1,000-horsepower, quad-turbo W16, do you really need more than one? Hyundai has released a glimpse of its upcoming i40 sedan ahead of the sedan's May 12 debut at the Barcelona Motor Show. The i40 represents the latest Hyundai to be released under the company's new "New thinking. New possibilities" ad slogan, along with its "fluidic sculpture" design language. According to Hyundai, the design brief uses shapes found in nature to make vehicles with a distinct flowing shape. To our eyes, we see a subtle evolution of the styling that made the Elantra so popular, and there's a little Lexus IS thrown in there for good measure.
When it debuts, Hyundai says the i40 concept will lead the D-segment for front head, shoulder and leg room, but until its debut next week, powerplant and production details are kept under lock and key.

Rigon to have surgery on leg
Coloni driver Davide Rigon will undergo surgery tomorrow in Istanbul after being diagnosed with multiple fractures to his tibia and fibula following his crash in the GP2 sprint race this morning. Rigon hit the barriers on the pit straight in a clash with Trident's Julian Leal, and though he initially managed to get himself out of the car unaided, he soon realised the extent of his injury and waited for medical assistance

Barrichello says Q3 is realistic
Rubens Barrichello is adamant his Williams team can qualify in the top ten in Turkey, the Brazilian labelling the updates introduced today as "promising". Barrichello, whose team is introducing several updates in the hope of turning around its season following a slow start, finished the day as 16th quickest, but was forced to stop early due to a problem with KERS. Despite that, Barrichello reckons it is realistic for Williams to aim to reach Q3 tomorrow.

Todt pushing for limited testing return
Formula 1 teams will be asked to support a move from FIA president Jean Todt for a return of limited in-season testing next year. Todt believes that the introduction of a total ban on testing during the season from the start of 2009 has been a failure, which is why he is now pushing for a limited amount of running to be allowed. He has tabled a proposal to allow three lots of two-day testing for discussion at the next meeting of the Formula 1 Commission, which takes place in Valencia on June 23, with the hope that it will be ratified for introduction in 2012

Nissan fills Portimao podium
Nissan swept the podium positions in the GT1 World Championship qualifying race at Portimao, with the JR Motorsports cars of Peter Dumbreck/Richard Westbrook and Lucas Luhr/Michael Krumm finishing first and second ahead of the Jamie Campbell-Walter/David Brabham Sumo Power machine. The Nissan crews had filled the first two rows after qualifying, but the second Sumo Power car was spun to the back of the field at the first corner when Ricardo Zonta was tagged by the fast-starting Swiss Racing Team Lamborghini of Peter Kox

The Kia Soul and special editions go together like hip-hop and hamsters. That is to say, some people love them and other folks might have heard enough of this, and heard enough of that. Regardless, the Soul is getting another special edition, and this time around it's the Hamstars that are getting the attention.
We saw the concept version of the Kia Soul Hamstar Edition at the 2010 SEMA show. Now, we've received confirmation from Kia that this stars and stripes-wearing Soul is coming to dealer lots in time for the 2011 spring season. Stripes run up the doors and on to the fenders while a star Hamstar logo sits on the hood and rear hatch. The Soul Hamstar will get a unique wheel package, and the inside will feature more Hamstar logos throughout. No word yet on pricing... but it's safe to assume it will cost you a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. Sorry.

Loeb maintains Sardinia lead
Sebastien Loeb has maintained a comfortable advantage in Italy despite running first on the road this morning. The world champion began the day with a 33.2-second cushion back to second place, and heads for service three stages later with a 35.4s lead. But his cause was helped by a puncture for second-placed Petter Solberg, who trimmed 7s out of Loeb's lead on the opening Coiluna stage but then lost 11s to the works Citroen as he had to travel through the final kilometres of Monte Lerno with a flat tyre.

Club Indiana took things to a different level in April with a day at the races at the FASTIMES Indoor Karting center on the north side of Indianapolis.�� The event attracted a full field of 20 entrants� (including a couple of interlopers from Club Illinois and a pair of SCCA racers), many of whom got together to start the festivities with lunch at the nearby Chammps Americana restaurant. Lloyd rejoins Coyne for oval races
Alex Lloyd will return to Dale Coyne Racing for the oval rounds of this year's IndyCar Series.
